Heartworm Medicines
A dog can be a wonderful companion. Hardly anything brings as much joy to a dog lover than to see a canines’ tail wagging energetically at the sight of their owner. It usually doesn’t take much time for a pet to be considered part of the family. So you want to make sure that your dog is going to be healthy and happy for as long as possible.
One of the main ways to insure a long and happy life for your canine is to schedule regular visits to your favorite veterinarian. This is very important since dogs have a major vulnerability to heartworms. Your veterinarian is probably a very good source of information on heartworms and heartworm medications. Most heartworm medication has to be prescribed by a vet, so they may know which brand and type would be the most beneficial to your dog.
A large number of vets like to prescribe the brand called Heart Guard. It seems to be a very popular, effective, and safe form of protection against heartworm. It is a chewable tablet and needs to be taken on a monthly basis. It is believed that Heart Guard may actually last a little longer than a month, but if you stick to a monthly schedule it will be easier to remember and follow.
Of course, there are a multitude of other brand names out there, as well as other types of heartworm medications. There are even some topical creams that can be rubbed on the dog for the prevention of this disease. Some of these are supposed to also prevent against fleas and ticks, but aren’t reported to have very good results. Some canine have even suffered from side effects that come from using these ointments, that have led to other health problems further down the road.
